Augmented Reality Enabled Warehouse Order Picking Solution

The Need

Order picking is the process that helps the  Warehouse managers and staff to locate and extract products that Customers ask for in a timely and cost-effective way. Typically, about 55% of the total operation cost of a Warehouse is for Order picking. Hence the limitations and errors  in this area resulting in un-necessary cost and operational loses.
Our client was looking for a technology solution to address this challenge.

Our Solution
  • Developed an AR based solution along with wearable Industrial grade smart glasses, Computer Vision and voice guided solution to offer hands-free and faster order picking.
  • The system uses smart glasses that merge virtual images and information with a picker’s surrounding environment. 
  • The combination of real-world and virtual information provides speed and accuracy

Components of the Solution

  • WMS Interface to download relevant data for the orders to fulfilled
  • Indoor location of Assets – BLE based location of asset of up to ~1 to 2m 
  • Path-planner (Auto-navigation) module – calculate the shortest path to collect all the items in the set of orders and based on indoor location of asset.
  • Wearable smart-glass  that guide visually and helps in hands free scanning of barcode and picking items

Solution Overview

  • The positioning system works based on BLE 5.0 Technology.
  • Each assets is tagged with a detachable BLE tag. 
  • The BLE Gateway placed in the warehouse will read the data transmitted from BLE tags and send to edge gateway via Wi-Fi or LAN.
  • The edge gateway will determine the position of the asset using state-of-the-art algorithms.
  • The Accuracy of positioning : 1 to 2 meters.
  • The smart glass is equipped with QR code/barcode scanning to verify the asset.
