Designed and Developed a System for Cell Processing for Cell and Gene Therapy Research and Manufacturing

The Need

Our Customer, a leading Medical technology company wanted to develop a system for cell processing for cell and gene therapy research and manufacturing.

Impacts Delivered
  • Interactive touch screen displays for enhanced customer experience.
  • Automation of complete process flows with a single button activation.
  • Live updates via animated process diagrams and alert messages.
  • Addition of new process flows made simple through csv files.
Our Solution
  • Design and development of a complex system with multiple sub-units- Windows-based panel PC, embedded controller unit, and RF unit
  • An intuitive GUI Application was design and developed that runs in a Windows host system and enables the execution of the cell processing steps.
  • Windows based PC application coordinates the communication between multiple units over an Ethernet link.
  • All peripherals are integrated using interfaces and protocols like Modbus over UART, SPI, ADC
  • The system allows the user to initiate, manage, and monitor a gene therapy cell process flow from a touch screen-enabled GUI.
  • The embedded Controller unit performs pumping of the process fluid containing the cells at different speeds and different paths while the ultrasonic excitation is done on the cells based on commands received from the host application via TCP.
  • The controller unit controls peripherals such as centrifugal pumps, peristaltic pumps, solenoid valves, load sensors, flow sensors, temperature sensors, bubble sensors etc. to implement this process flow and monitoring
  • The application reads and parses the cell processing steps fed to it by the user as a CSV file
Tools & Technologies
  • C# for the Windows applications
  • Embedded firmware communication using protocols like Modbus over UART, SPI, ADC.
  • Embedded Microcontroller based control unit.
