Remote Diagnostics and Monitoring Systems for Railways Signaling Assets

The Need

Railways have multiple indoor assets like relays and outdoor assets like track circuits, point machines, signals etc. which are currently monitored on failure or through scheduled maintenance. Railway standards body brought out a specification for RDPMS to ensure the smooth and safe operation of railways by maintaining high availability of signaling assets. We partnered with Railways in building and deploying the solution.

Impacts Delivered
  • Designed, developed and deployed a RDPMS solution that is RDSO standard compliant.
  • We have implemented accurate real-time data collection mechanism from distributed assets having varying voltage and current levels.
  • Enabled proactive decision making with respect to the signaling assets health and maintenance. 
Our Solution
  • We worked with railways in field survey to identify the outdoor assets and parameters to be monitored.
  • Installed data collection system on location boxes including FTU, Sensor connect and RF devices. 
  • Installation and configuration of RDPMS-Gateway at the station premises and established connectivity with the sensors, data logger devices, and other assets.
  • Data mapping was performed for all identified parameters.
  • Created the wiring diagrams and instrumentation plan for collecting the data for the identified parameters.
  • Custom dashboards were designed for defined KPIs, trends, faults, and anomaly conditions.
  • Instrumentation along with physical wiring is done and the data is collected at the defined intervals to the edge gateway.
  • Process and aggregate the data into a Data Lake 
  • Deployed the trained AI/ML model for failure prediction.
  • Developed UI, Alert screen and decision support system for the management team. 
  • By using the dashboards with graphs, the maintenance staffs are now able to perform remote monitoring and diagnostics of critical signaling and track circuits.

Solution Components

  • RDPMS – FTU/Gateway: Supports Modbus TCP connectivity for Analog data collection
  • RDPMS – RF Module:  Low Power consuming RF module at 868 MHz, have a bandwidth of 2Kbps, with onboard storage for 3000 samples.
  • RDPMS – Cloud:
    • Facilitate device provisioning, data storage, management, user administration, and analytics.
    • RDPMS-Cloud offers intuitive dashboards, real-time monitoring, AI & ML-driven asset failure predictions, and automated alert notifications and user-friendly reports. 
    • It complies with major industry standards to ensure seamless interoperability with other vendor systems.
    • With easy configurability, and low code application development, custom dashboards and visualizations can be created easily
